With engraved portrait of Emerson as frontispiece and facsimiles of two of Emerson's letters. 4to, original white cloth over gray boards with the original printed paper label to the spine panel. [viii], [134], [1] pp. A very good and handsome copy, some of the usual mellowing to the turnovers and edges, clean and crisp and tight internally. FIRST EDITION OF THIS FINE WORK ON EMERSON BY A MAN WHO KNEW HIM AND THE TRANSCENDENTALIST AUTHORS WELL. A very early biography of Emerson, and one of the best-known, featuring very personal reflections on the man and his times. Franklin Benjamin Sanborn graduated from Harvard in 1855 and settled in Concord as a schoolteacher, where his pupils included the children of Emerson, Hawthorne, and the elder Henry James. He was also a close friend of Thoreau and the Alcott family.
