[viii], [134], [1] pp. A very good and handsome copy, some of the usual mellowing to the turnovers and edges, clean and crisp and tight internally. FIRST EDITION OF THIS FINE WORK ON EMERSON BY A MAN WHO KNEW HIM AND THE TRANSCENDENTALIST AUTHORS WELL. A very early biography of Emerson, and one of the best-known, featuring very personal reflections on the man and his times. Franklin Benjamin Sanborn graduated from Harvard in 1855 and settled in Concord as a schoolteacher, where his pupils included the children of Emerson, Hawthorne, and the elder Henry James. He was also a close friend of Thoreau and the Alcott family.
