About This Item

London : J M Dent and Company, 1892 A very good to near fine copy of the first issue of Dent's illustrated edition of Persuasion. In the original pale green cloth binding with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. Issued as part of the 'Novels of Jane Austen' series with a preface by Brimley Johnson, a black and white frontispiece and 2 further black and white plates by William C Cooke and decorative title and decorative headpiece by F C Tilney. The binding is very bright and clean. There is light pulling at the spine ends and a tiny indentation at the top edge of the back board. Top page edges gilt - remainder untrimmed. Internally, there is the bookplate of Castlecraig Library to the top of the front pastedown endpaper and the decorative 'ex libris' picture has not been filled in. The free endpapers are brown toned as usual. The contents are complete (apart from the removal of the tissue guard to the frontispiece), and are very clean. There is a crease to the top corner tip of p63 and some side edges are quite rough where they have been opened.

Synopsis

Written in her final illness, Persuasion is Jane Austen's finest novel. Eight years ago, Anne Elliot bowed to pressure from her family and made the decision not to marry the man she loved, Captain Wentworth. Now circumstances have conspired to bring him back into her social circle and Anne finds her old feelings for him reignited. However, when they meet again Wentworth behaves as if they are strangers and seems more interested in her friend Louisa. In this, her final novel, Jane Austen tells the story of a love that endures the tests of time and society with humor, insight, and tenderness.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
