Helen Waddell (1899-1965) was an Irish poet, playwright, translator, and novelist. Peter Abelard was written in 1933; it is Waddell's take on the famous romance of Abelard and Heloise. The book reached best seller status and went through 20 printings to 1935. It was then reprinted as the Popular Edition in 1939 and reprinted four times, the last in 1944. The sale volume is from the 1944 reprint, blue cloth binding with dark blue lettering on spine only. Binding tight and square with no marking inside or out. The color of the blue cloth at spine has faded noticeably and there is a slight separation with the first 5 or six pages at upper edge of page block. Unclipped dust jacket is blue with white lettering. Clean and bright but some foxing at spine area and wear at upper and lower part of spine. 303 pages.

Helen Waddell has shared her love of the medieval world when she wrote this revealing book of not only of the love between Peter Abelard and the young Heloise but of insights into the politics of the church in the 12th century. For anyone who loves literature and has a sense of the spiritual will enjoy this book on Peter Abelard.
