Laid in is an early photographic image of the author with some notations to the verso. Arthur Rackham was one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century, a period which is referred to as the "golden age" in British book design. His works were produced in both limited and mass market editions as there was a large market for ornately illustrated books before the First World War. Rackham used a unique style, thought to mix European and East Asian influences, that involved both pen and India Ink as well as watercolor. His work was displayed all over Europe - and received awards at International Exhibitions in Milan and… Read More

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1906. The first appearance of Peter Pan in the title of a book First Rackham edition, first US printing. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was the most popular Christmas gift book for 1906 and was highly successful commercially. The story of Peter Pan had its genesis in Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird, in which the central chapters tell of a child "who escaped from being a human when he was seven days old... and flew back to Kensington Gardens". Barrie developed this story into a play (first performed in 1904, but not published until 1928), this book of 1906 (the first to appear with the name of the character in the title) and, finally, the novel Peter and Wendy which was published in 1911. As noted by Fred Gettings, the "publication and quality" of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens "was a sure sign that Rackham had arrived, and was now to remain as one of the leading illustrators in a wide field of book titles". The Pittsburgh Post noted, on 17 September… Read More

Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1912]. Arthur Rackham at his best Best Rackham edition, originally published in 1906. This edition is enlarged with a new frontispiece and seven full-page drawings that are not in the first edition. The plates were bound in sequence with the story for the first time. "Mr Barrie's touch of fantasy, homely but eerie too, is admirably reflected. Moreover, the pictures are simple, and are clearly and firmly drawn" (Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art). "The delightful colour and black-and-white illustrations are Arthur Rackham at his best, and, perhaps, no other artist could have been so happy in his results... Mr Rackham's work is such that one is always finding charming little unexpected surprises in out-of-the-way corners of his pictures. These illustrations are not to be merely glanced at, but carefully studied to derive the full amount of pleasure from them" (The Bystander). Quarto. London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, , [1920 or later]. In original dust jacket and pictorial box Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was first published in 1906, in both deluxe and trade editions, with the plates gathered at the end. The "New Edition" of 1912 is in larger format, with new illustrations dated 1912, the colour plates distributed throughout the text, the text entirely reset (readily identifiable by running headlines in a large italic typeface), uncoloured head- and tailpieces to each chapter, a calligraphic title page printed in two colours without the word "Limited" after the publishers' name, and with untrimmed fore and lower edges. In the first impression, the map of Kensington Gardens is printed across the page, with a blank verso. Later impressions of the New Edition have the title page printed in black only and the company name given as "Hodder & Stoughton Limited": these were presumably issued after December 1919, when the firm was incorporated as a limited company.
