The Philosopher's Pupil is a 1993 novel by British writer Dame Jean Iris Murdoch (1919 - 1999). Set in the small English spa town of Ennistone where town folk continuously bathe in constant ritual cleansing while filling the rising mists of the hot springs with gossip and rumour. It is to here that John Robert Rozonov, distinguished Ennistonian philosopher, returns with his orphaned grand daughter Hattie Meynell and his maid, Pearl Scotney. Rozanov's concern is that Hattie should lose her virginity to his handpicked choice. To this end Rozanov selects Tom McCaffrey and rents the Slipper House for the locale. But nothinng remains a secret in this town of towns blessed with a free-spirited local newspaper. Oh, the philosopher's pupil? ----Book is named for George McCaffrey; a "rejected student" of Rozanov who reconciles, once again, with his wife after the steaming mists part momentarily as do many a life that undergoes change.
