I'd been meaning to find out more about the Phoenicians and looked at several books on the topic. This was the only one that appeared to be even slightly fun to read. And it is! It is as close to being a page-turner as one can imagine, given the topic; I can see why it was a best-seller in Germany. The author traveled to many of the sites discussed in the book, and describes them in memorable detail. He met with descendants of the various groups he discusses, and is sympathetic in his depictions of them. He also met with a variety of scholars, and lets the reader in on the resulting discussions. He tells entertaining stories based on ancient letters, unearthed by lucky chance. What more can you want? Caroline Hillier - the translator for the book on the Phoenicians - did a great job.
