About This Item
New York: Harper Collins, 1991. First Edition. Illustrated with a great profusion of full and double-page colour and black and white photographs throughout. Large 4to, publisher's original photographically decorated boards, lettered and printed in copper and black, in the original dustjacket. 232 pp. A very fine copy, near as pristine, the dustjacket with a little bit of wear at the extremities. FIRST EDITION. A book which collects the most famous images as well as many unpublished pictures, and a generous sampling of early black and white work. Her subjects---from Patti Smith and the Rolling Stones, to Tennessee Williams, Magic Johnson, Mikhail Baryshnikov are approached with curiosity and ardor and sometimes whimsy but always with the intelligence and flair that have made her such an important figure in the world of professional photography.
William Stapp, Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery wrote that her work "belongs to a long and noble tradition...What Leibovitz has contributed to the genre is a wit that reflets her understanding of contemporary popular culture, an ability to achieve an intimate rapport with her subjects and a visual audacity that is unusual in the history of portrait photography.
