About This Item
Sydney, Alexandria: Kingsclear Books, 2006. Paperback oblong large quarto, very good plus condition, black & white photos, minimal edgewear. 140 pp. Anne-Maree Whitaker provides a richly illustrated history of Marrickville, this diverse multicultural inner western municipality in Sydney. Thomas Chalder, who was born in Marrick, Yorkshire in 1813 and arrived in Sydney in 1842, purchased land from the late Robert Wardell. In 1855, his 6-acre Marrick estate was subdivided for sale and auctioneer and local publican William Dean is credited for adding the French "ville" to the name to attract capitalists, market gardeners and speculators to the sale. By the middle of the 19th century wealthy settlers established nurseries, orchards, dairies and market gardens to supply Sydney's needs. Brickworks were established to build stylish houses along the railway lines. Businessmen such as Thomas Holt and the Hordern family settled in this convenient locality close to busy Newtown and the city but with fresh air. (1 of 2 available copies.).
