1900. Presumed first edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Early 20th Chinese concertina fold out book with wood covers and 11 hand painted Illustrations on silk, with silk borders. Illustrations include evocative images of silk skeins hanging to dry, leaves being collected from mulberry trees, feeding the worms from bamboo trays, two women carefully observing worms to see if they are ready to spin, a bamboo frame erected for worms to weave cocoons, women sorting the silk by color and quality, and boiling the cocoons.
Tells the story of silk cultivation, from hatching of the silkworm eggs through to the creation of silk fabric and the tailor. With dark brown wood covers front and back, with an embossed Chinese "Foo" character filled in green and carved into front board. Text in English & Chinese. A beautiful period piece with hand painted illustrations on silk. 5 1/4 x 7", top and bottom edges of pages stained dark brown.
