About This Item

London: Blackie & Son,, 1878. First edition of this handsomely produced work, presented here in the publisher's striking deluxe binding and no doubt issued by Blackie with an eye on Queen Victoria's forthcoming Golden Jubilee in 1887. Thomas Archer (1830-1893) was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a fiction writer who specialized in "stories and sketches of the lower classes in the metropolis... Later in his career, Archer wrote fiction for the younger reader often drawing on his historical knowledge: e.g., By Fire and Sword, A Story of The Huguenots (1855)" (Sutherland, p. 26). Two volumes, quarto. Publisher's deluxe red morocco over bevelled boards, spines and covers elaborately tooled in gilt and black, richly gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. With 69 engraved plates printed in sepia, with tissue guards. A little rubbing, inner hinges strengthened with cloth, occasional finger-soiling, otherwise internally clean. A very good copy indeed. John Sutherland, The Stanford Companion to Victorian Fiction, 1990.
