About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf , 1984. 569 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "(T)he powerful, quietly savage, funny and heart-piercing story of a group of young R.A.F. pilots, mere boys of 19 and 20, during the year from September 1939 (the beginning of the so-called Phony War, when fighting men were filled with chivalric fantasies of honor and derring-do, and life in uniform was a luxurious escapade), to September 1940: the deadly realities of the Battle of Britain and the huge Luftwaffe raid on London that was the culmination of Hitler's airborne Blitzkrieg." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight discoloration at top/bottom edges of boards, small bump at top corner of front and rear board, previous owner's small notation, name and date on free front endpaper, very soft crease down free rear endpaper and adjacent pages. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, flap-folds and flaps - minor edge wrinkling elsewhere, very light rubbing, light wear at top of front hinge, sharp crease down rear flap.. First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good-.
