Description

London: Cassell & Company, 1935. First Edition. First edition of Lawrence Durrell's first novel. Highly autobiographical in character, an apprentice effort, Durrell's novel sank largely without trace. And as with so many unsold titles, the majority of copies were destroyed during the Blitz. The Pied Piper of Lovers, published in 1935 by Cassell & Company, is Lawrence Durrell's debut novel. This first edition is a significant piece of literary history as it marks the beginning of Durrell's renowned writing career. Set in London, the story revolves around a group of young bohemian artists as they explore love, friendship, and the pursuit of creative expression. Despite its initial lukewarm reception, The Pied Piper of Lovers offers a unique glimpse into Durrell's formative years and the themes that would later become hallmarks of his work. Its pages encapsulate the origins of a literary master, showcasing the raw talent that would eventually earn Durrell a place among the great writers of his time. "Pied Piper of Lovers" is part of a loose trilogy with Durrell's subsequent novels, "Panic Spring" and "The Black Book." Blue boards with the barest hint of rubbing to edges; no dustjacket, spine incorrectly lettered Pied Pipers of Lovers, bookseller's price on front free endpaper, slight spotting to fore and top-edges, otherwise a clean, solid, well-preserved copy of Lawrence's exceedingly scarce first novel.
