On Jul 5 2007, Physiojohn said:
This is the first Pilates book I have encountered which tackles the enormous task of providing a comprehensive overview and study of Pilates, including the full range of apparatus. It covers material that has only previously been available in a few professional educational programmes.

The book is for professionals and serious enthusiasts who seek a deeper understanding of the Pilates Method from the muscle focus and action of the exercise, to the far reaching benefits. It guides teachers and students through the philosophy and much of the vast repertoire of the Pilates method.

The author is respectful of and inspired by the original system of physical and mental conditioning developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates. The book also succeeds in explaining the science of human movement as it relates to the Pilates method. The material is referenced both scientifically through anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology and artistically through aesthetics, inner sensations, psychological components and energy flow.

The book is introduced with three chapters on the principles and history of Pilates, and then continues, with eight comprehensive and clearly illustrated sections based around the Pilates equipment and mat work. The final chapter suggests sample exercise routines and introduces the concept of flow between the exercises of the repertoire. Groups of exercises can be formed into blocks targeting specific aims, while performing them sequentially assists muscle memory. The flexibility of this system is unending and there is special reference to adapting exercises for specific populations.

The book identifies two groups needing exercise modification, both of which are relevant to physiotherapists. The first group, are those people/patients needing decreased intensity of work (elderly, injured, or rehabilitating) requiring modifications of the exercises and the use of assists such as cushions, exercise bands and springs. The second group consists of those who may need increased intensity (athletes, dancers and gymnasts), requiring additional overload on the muscles and measures that make the exercises more complex.

In reviewing the book I found it easy to navigate and rich with information, well indexed and provided in a timely manner. The quality of the photography provides excellent consistency to the books presentation and greatly enhances the readers experience. Available in a spacious, horizontal A4 format. I think it likely that this book will deliver its authors intension of writing the definitive Pilates book, which will become the textbook for those who teach and practice the method. Refreshingly for those used to buying medical books, Pilates by Rael Isacowitz has a recommended selling price of 13.99 (soft back) and is available

new on the internet for under 10. Certainly, my recommended buy, for anyone seriously interested in Pilates.
