Conrad Potter Aiken (1889-1973) is considered by many literary critics as central to American literature, a "literary period in himself." Aiken is best known for his 1930 Pulitzer Prize-winning book Selected Poems (1929). In almost all of Aiken's works, the writer addresses the individual consciousness in juztaposition to the world at large. Aiken published more than 50 titles, including 35 collections of poetry, five novels, one autobiographical essay, and several collections of short stories and criticism. Bonnel A10a From Aiken's preface: "His pilgrimage is not real: it is imaginary. It is a cerebral adventure, of which the motive is a desire for knowledge". The poem begins a long discussion of the attempts of Festus to discover self-knowledge. The poem ends where it began, Aiken will not allow Festus to plunge into despair. Festus has conquered all, but in order to exist he must continue to search for new areas to conquer. .
