1721. RUYSCH, Frederik. OPERA OMNIA ANATOMICO-MEDICO-CHIRURGICA. Huc usque edita. Quorum Elenchus pagina sequenti exhibetur. Cum figuris aeneis. Amstelodami, apud Janssonio-Waesbergios, 1721 [i.e. c. 1733]. 4 quarto volumes. Engraved title-page and portrait, 9 text illustrations, + 135 sheets of engraved illustrations. (The illustrations of jars and tableaux of skeletons in the Thesaurus anatomicus by Cornelius Huyberts are worthy of special note for their surreal combination of flowers, fishes, reptiles, seashells and delicate body parts.) This is a four-volume collection of separately published works by Ruysch or of works addressed to him by others; it also includes a life of Ruysch by J. F. Schreiber, a four-page table of contents (which lists only a portion of the works that comprise this set), and an index, dated 1725. The forty-four component works, in varying editions, were all printed by Jansson & Waesberge at Amsterdam from 1720-1733; each has a separate title-page and pagination. It…

t'Amsterdam, Voor Justus Danckersz., Konst, Kaert en Boeck verkooper, in de Kalver-straet, in de Danckers, 1667, Cont. marbled boards, worn., titlepage with engr. vignette and 4 engr. plates and 4 pages containing the Latin and Dutch explanations. 44 x 33 cm. * Dutch edition of the Pinax Microcosmographicus by the German physician Johannes Remmelin (1583-1632), first published in Augsburg in 1613 as 'Catroptrum microcosmicum suis aere incisis visionibus splendens cum historia et pinace de novo prodit' : three separate broadsheets on the anatomy of the male and female body, drawn by Remmelin and engraved by Lucas Kilian. This Dutch edition of 1667 contains the three original anatomical plates, redesigned with alterations by the Dutch engraver and printer Justus Danckers (1635-1701). The three anatomical plates are composed of several overlapping layers so that the male and female corpse and its main parts could be disected as an exercise for students. Danckers added a fourth plate: 'Afbeeldenisse der Huyd-aderen, die men gewoon is te openen, en te koppen.' A fine copy of this beautiful 17th century "flapbook", with explanatory texts in Latin and Dutch. Complete with all plates in good condition. A few traces of use inside, no loss of text. Rare. Detailed description and photos available on request.

Description:
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. This copy, in contemporary full leather binding, formed part of the Selbourne Library - acquired by the late Hugh Selbourne - and has the Selbourne Library stamp to the verso of the title page, and the bottom margin of p 51.…

First edition. Duckworth and Co. London. 1918. Octavo. xviii, 372pp. 7 plates, 20 text illus. Original green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Spine relaid. Endpapers renewed. Corners rubbed and slightly bumped. John George Adami (1862 - 1926) FRS, FRSE, CBE, LL.D., "qualified in medicine at Manchester and in 1892 was appointed professor of pathology at McGill University. At the invitation of the Royal College of Physicians (in London) he delivered the Croonian Lectures in 1917. He chose the title 'Adaptation and disease; the contribution of medical research to the study of evolution'. Adami believed that medical work had brought to light important facts about heredity that had not been communicated adequately to biological scientists. He used the lectures to describe this work, placing particular emphasis on his contention that acquired characters are inherited." M. Buttolph Journal of Medical Biography 2010.

Description:
Venice: [Boneto Locatello], 1504. Vellum. Very good. Third printed edition after those of Bologna (1489) and Venice (1498). 141 leaves with double columns of 66 lines each in 3 sizes of gothic letters. 32 cm. 18th-century vellum binding with leather spine label and yapp edges. Five words added in ink on title page "de Florentia, Cartusiensis" and at the bottom "Venetiis 1504". Turisanus (ca. 1275 - ca. 1350) studied medicine first in Bologna, where he was considered to be Taddeo Alderotti's best pupil, and then in Paris, before returning to Bologna to teach and finally become a monk. His most famous work is this "more than commentary" on Galen of Pergamum's Art of Medicine, which incorporates much philosophical learning but also displays a measure of scientific originality. The method is scholastic, but this did not prevent the text from playing a central role in medical education for over 200 years, appearing in print until 1557. Latin text.

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

"In this book, real life photos are used to help young people feel more comfortable with interacting with other children and making new friends. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of…
