Austin: E.L. Steck Co, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 474 pp, in original green cloth stamped in gilt. Minor wear and abrasion to corners, else a fine copy. This was first serious attempt to tell the story of the part women played in the early years of Texas and is still regarded as an essential reference. It contains biographies of 77 notable women who came to Texas before statehood (i.e., prior to 1845), compiled from the recollections and memoirs by the women themselves, their descendants, friends, and other sources.
