About This Item

Community Presbyterian Church of Lake City, 1976. Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dustjacket as issued. . In Very Good+ condition. The "Great San Juan Excitement" was the discovery of a supposed gold mine near Lake City, Colorado, in 1874. This book includes vivid descriptions of pioneer life in Colorado. George Marshall Darley (1847-1917) was raised in Nebraska. He was the son of a carpenter, whose wanderings found him in Galveston, Texas, where he felt called to preach the gospel. He was known for preaching to the dock workers and at the local YMCA, before he joined his brother Alexander M. Darley in ministry in Del Norte, Colorado. Darley was the pioneering minister in the San Juan Mountains, who built the first church of any kind in western Colorado in Lake City in 1876. Darley Mountain, near Ouray, Colorado, is named in his remembrance. "No minister has done more for Presbyterianism in Colorado in organizing churches, founding the Presbyterian College of the Southwest, and in devoted loyalty to the standards than Dr. Darley".
