London : Henry G Bohn, 1851. Cloth. Near Fine. 9.5" by 6". Clarkson Stanfield of the Royal Academy.. The second edition of these two popular adventure novels. Illustrated with twenty full page plates from drawings by Clarkson Stanfield of the Royal Academy. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. The second edition, following the first edition published in 1836. In original full cloth blue binding by Westleys & Co. All edges are gilt with gilt stamping to the spine and a ship design with a border blind stamped to the front and rear boards. Two of Marryat's popular works published together, The Pirate and The Three Cutters. Captain Frederick Marryat was a British Royal Navy officer and a close acquaintance of Charles Dickens. He was an early pioneer of the sea story and wrote several novels in this genre. He is probably best known for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest. In original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Isaac Morris, Liverpool as well as the bookplate of 'Marion C Walker Her Book'. Bookseller's label to front pastedown, 'Bookseller to the Queen Dowager, King, Stationer and Bookbinder, Lyworth St & 44 East St. Brighton'. Binder's label to rear pastedown, Westleys & Co. Rear hinge is slightly strained but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright with instances of scattered spots throughout. Near Fine
