Contemporary full tree calf with six spine compartments between gilt rules. Gilt decoration on board edges. Final 6 pages blank. Contents: The Village -- The Parish Register -- The Library -- The Newspaper -- The Birth of Flattery -- Reflections -- Sir Eustace Grey -- The Hall of Justice -- Woman! Bookplate on front fixed endpaper and inscriptions on blank leaf following front free endpaper indicating that this book was given to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College in 1845 by Robert Ralston, Jr. Oval Dickinson College Library stamp on front free endpaper. Embossed Dickinson College Library stamp at foot of title page. Call number in white at tail of spine. Four-digit number stamped at foot of p. [iii]. No other marks of former library ownership. Robert Ralston, Jr. (1795-1858), who graduated from Dickinson College in 1814, was a member of the successful mercantile family of Philadelphia. Possibly the first American edition; the priority of the three editions has not been established. In Good- Condition: lacking leather from upper third of spine and lower corner of front board; front joint separated; pencilled inscription along lower edge of p. 13; light foxing on title page and few following pages; otherwise pages are clean and tight.
