The second edition of this work in half calf bindings. A collection of poetry by the Romantic poet William Cowper. These volumes include 'Table Talk', 'The Progress of Error', 'Charity', 'John Gilpin', 'The Task', and more. William Cowper was a popular English poet who helped initiate the Romantic movement, with his descriptions of life in the English countryside. After a stint of being institutionalised for insanity, Cowper recovered and began focusing on writing religious works. He was strongly against slavery, using his poems to try and support the Abolitionist campaign. 2 pages of publisher's advertisements to the front of volume II. In half calf bindings. Externally, rubbed to the spine and extremities, with small losses to the backstrips. Both boards detached to vol I. Boards of vol II are tender, with the front board held by one cord and the rear board held by two cords. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age toned to the page perimeters, with the odd spot, more so to the first and last few pages. Some offsetting to the text of vol II. Good Only

Contemporary full tan calf, recently rebacked with the original spines laid over. Gilt titles to red labels on spines. Armorial bookplate of Michael Pepper to front pastedown of each volume, as well as his black ink ownership to both title pages. Toning and few marks to edges. Crisp and clean internally, but for the invasive ownerships. Heavy wear to bindings. Original spines especially heavily worn and cracked, with some dried residue from wax formerly applied. Restored to a robust, useable condition. Good. The first collected volume of poetry by Cowper, first published in 1782, here supplemented with a second volume including 'The Task' (1785), and 'The History of John Gilpin' (1782).
