Princes Street, Hanover Square, London: T & J Allmann, 1822. Illustrated with three simple hand-coloured plates, octavo, pp xii, 378, extremely clean and sound inyternally, half calf and marbled boards, raised bands and leather label to the spine, very slight signs of wear. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Charles William Hamilton, 2nd Baronet, and his small neat signature on the title page. [Phillips lived much of his life on the south coast, and gained a national reputation as a landscape gardener. His first plan for the development of a lrge site in Kemp Town, Brighton, was rejected, but the second attempt five years later was accepted. His grandiose Anthaeum project, an elaborate indoor botanical garden topped by "the largest dome in the world", ended in disaster when the structure spectacularly collapsed just before its official opening. His ideas on the layout of plants and flowers in relation to their surroundings were influential. When Brighton and Hove City Council restored the gardens and grounds of the Royal Pavilion to show how they would have appeared at the height of the Regency era, they did so according to Phillips' ideas - specifically his belief that "a well-planted shrubbery depends on the selection of trees and shrubs which succeed each other in blossoming throughout the year, as well as contrasting shades of green ... and under-planted flowers".]. Second edition. Half Leather. Very Good.

Description:
Leningrad, 1842. RARE. Small quarto, pp 189, contemporary mottled boards, lacking the backstrip. Duplicate formed from the fusion of the Boissier/Candolle libraries. C.E. Hubbard's copy. [Hubbard was the dean of the British agrostologists, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the world's grasses. He did not follow the increasingly popular view of recognizing four to six subfamilies by listing only two (Festucoideae and Panicoideae) and 27 tribes. Trinius prepared a summary of grass classification and synonymy, in which he listed 2457 species, along with their author and place of publication - this was a cornerstone of modern grass taxonomy.]. First Edition. Boards. Good.

Description:
Kinabalu & Kew, 1998. Second edition, now out of print. Very well illustrated, including watercolours by Pandora Sellars and Carol Woodin, and many colour photographs of plants in the wild, large octavo, pp x, 428, fore-edge very slightly foxed, dustwrapper a little age-toned, and very slightly worn, endpapers a little marked, otherwise a very good copy in a very slightly worn slipcase. Signed by the author. [Paphiopedilums are, and have been since the early nineteenth century, one of the most popular of all orchid groups and are now widely grown throughout the world. There are almost 70 known species, all of which have their own attractive qualities appealing to growers, but many species are rare in the wild. Recent evidence has been synthesized to produce a modern classification of the genus. Chapters on the hybridization, cultivation (by Michael Tibbes), and conservation are also included. This treatment is a framework for future research as well as a sound guide to growers of these… Read More

Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history.
