Sedgwick was a popular Massachusetts author in the first half of the 19th century, whose best-selling work was the historical novel "Hope Leslie" about the early interactions between British settlers and Native Americans in Massachusetts colony. She would be regarded today as a feminist, who chose to remain unmarried throughout her life to focus on her writing career and who wrote about women's rights in her 1857 novel "Married or Single?"
