About This Item

James Duncan, London ; Thomas Tegg and Son, Cheapside, 1830. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Three volumes (complete). Quarter-leather (spine and corners). These three pocket sized volumes are part of Conder's excessively popular series, "The Modern Traveller". The spine has git decoration and titling. They are uniformly clubbable and neat. Folded map at the fore of volume 1 is particularly fascinating (Port Natal / Durban for example, is still shown as Natal Bay). Interestingly Corden never travelled far from London! Three most gentlemanly books. The leathered spines and corners of all three have age and shelving wear. They are benign. The markbled boards have scuffing and wear and some marking from handling and age. They are sound, steady. The front pastedown of all three have ex-libris plates indicating previous ownership by George Greenhill, with the Greenhill family crest. On the frontispage, there are serene and rustic ex-libris plates showing further ownership by Edna and Frank Bradlow of Cape Town, the esteemed Africana collectors and specialists. The contents are most gratifying. They are extraordinarily healthy and hale. The marbled paper trims are neat and tidy. The pages are tight, clean, clear, benevolent, generous, exceptionally smart with but a smattering of foxing here and there. Three special books. fk.
