About This Item

London: Lovell Reeve, 1857 A very good copy in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates. One of the scarcer titles in the Popular Natural History Series. The series was designed for young people to provide a good introduction to different aspects of natural history. Agnes Catlow wrote 2 other titles for the series. The binding has a gilt design and title to the spine and a gilt plant design to the front board. It is in very good clean condition. There is some pulling and scuffing to the spine ends and some scuffing to spine joints. The back board has a small scuffed area at the top edge next to the spine. Corners are lightly turned with rubbling. Internally the original endpapers are present with a blurred sprawly inscription at the fep and small paper loss at the bottom of the front joint. Contents are complete and clean, apart from the lack of a tissue guard to the frontispiece. The hand coloured plates are very bright (plate 1 is the frontispiece and is not at p23 where the plate index lists it). The final 2 text pages are unopened. There is slight spotting to the verso of the fep and the half title and some darkening to top page edges. Page vii of the preface has small loss at the top edge where it has been poorly opened.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
