About the author

Born in 1942, Dr. PETER QUARTERMAINE specialises in postcolonial and visual cultures at the University of Exeter, where he is a Senior Lecturer. A former member of the University's Centre for Maritime Historical Studies, he has taught, researched or published in many countries, and has held fellowships at the Humanities Research Centre, Canberra, and at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. He is a Research Associate of the Museum, and in 1998 was a Visiting Professor at Venice International University and Ca' Foscari University, Venice. His earlier books include definitive studies of Australia's leading contemporary writer, Thomas Keneally, and artist, Jeffrey Smart. In 1996 Building on the Sea: Form and Meaning in Modern Ship Architecture was published jointly by the Museum and Academy Editions, London, a work which brought together his professional experience in visual studies and a lifelong interest in things maritime. A member of the Design History Society, he has addressed the Society's annual conference, and has discussed contemporary maritime and design topics on both regional and national radio.
