Half morocco. Woodblock Chinese texts above English translation with exception of Appendix printed in July 1840 for which woodblocks could not be cut in time & where the Chinese characters were printed with the East India Company's movable Chinese type. Both types (though especially English) firmly bitten in to native stock. Shuck presents an unbiased (almost satirical) account of the futile Chinese attempts to rid themselves of British opium imports in printing their edicts, many of which were in effect supplications to the "rascally" English smugglers who "only know how to benefit themselves, regardless of the injuries the inflict upon our people!" By the time of the final document ("for the removal of the evils arising from opium") the government is reduced to a warrant on all English heads: "The taking alive of English barbarians no matter they be soldiers or merchants, for every such individual, a reward, in cash, of one hundred dollars shall be given. For the murder of each one of the above, the fact being verified, one fifth of the aforesaid sum shall be awarded." Greater awards (up to twenty thousand dollars) were offered for English officers and ships. Nineteenth century title page rebacking with no effect to text. This copy that of R.H. Horne (his name to t.p.), collaborator with Charles Dickens in "The Great Exhibition and the Little One" (1856) contrasting Britain's exuberant display in the Great Exhibition with the restrained Chinese "Little One" in Hyde Park. Mid twentieth century half brown morocco; five raised bands; marbled end papers and boards; title, author, place & date to spine; previous owner's name to foot. Top edge gilt. A little underscoring and knowledgeable linguistic scholia with alternate translations. A complete text in a handsome yet supple half morocco binding. Cordier 1905-6 (q.v.); Lust 478. This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…

"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."Scars and bruises may fade, but we must remember what caused them. The purpose of《Wounds of Hong Kong》is to record police brutality. All 24 interviewees have sacrificed in their own ways during the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. Among the thousands wounded, they are only a few. I would like to sincerely thank them for sharing their experience, insights, and feelings to me. I remember at the beginning of the resistance outbreak in June of 2019. As a photographer/journalist, I felt unsure. Protesters all covered their faces with masks, so how could I tell their stories? How can I search their ethos beneath the masks? However, my worry was quickly swept away as I realized that they weren't the only ones…
