About This Item

The Egoist Press, London., 1921. Third U.K. edition. One of 1000 copies bound from the U.S. sheets. The book was first published in New York in 1916. The first U.K. edition of 1917 used American sheets. This was followed by the 1918 edition which used English sheets. The return to American sheets for this edition suggests that English printers were worried about prosecution. Octavo. pp [iv], 299.Covers lightly marked. Head and tail of spine scuffed. Rear joint rubbed and splitting. Good only.

Synopsis

Joyce's A Portait of the Artist as a Young Man is a semi-autobiographical work. It tells of the intellectual, religious, and philosophical awakening of the main character, Stephen Dedalus as he rebels against the conventions in which he has been raised and leaves home to pursue his artistic ambition.
