Chatto & Windus 1953 1st edition. Hardback. Size approx 8 x 5 inches. In blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine, in original illustrated dustwrapper. In very good condition with very good dustwrapper. (DW darkened, some minor marks, tear to rear corner, rubbing to edges.) Minor marks to cloth. Cloth slightly darkened along top edge. Neat inscription to ‘half-title’ page. Some mild spotting to outer edges else pages very clean and tight throughout. Stories of the voyage to Antarctica and of the life in the base camp, with some of the minor exploratory journeys. The author, a member of Watkin’s expedition to the Ice cap of Greenland in 1930, has aimed to show how men face up to living at very close quarters in terrible conditions of snow and ice. He as drawn extensively from unpublished diaries of his own and of his companions.( life on a weather station). Numerous photo. plates. 173 pp.
