Octavo; publisher's blue pictorial cloth stamped in gilt, green, and white and signed in image "MA" by the designer Margaret Armstrong, top edge gilt; [6],162pp.; eight leaves of color plates, color pictorial title page. Light shelf wear, spine a bit toned and gilt dulled, contemporary bookseller ticket to front free endpaper, else Very Good and sound overall. Additionally tipped to front free endpaper is an excised portion of an autograph note from the author: "Try for that. But you may engaged for $125 if you can do no better. Yours truly / G.W. Cable."

Earliest combined edition of these two stories, "Père Raphaël" having first appeared in the author's collection "Old Creole Days" in 1879.
