The Postmodern Arts begins by establishing definitions of both words, while also demonstrating the inconsistencies and contradictions which are inherent within them.

First line

During the late 1960s a distracting advert was to be seen on the walls of bars and restaurants in Italy: it was an aerial photograph of St Mark's Square in Venice, where bird seed had been arranged in the shape of huge letters on the flagstones of the piazza so as to spell out COCA-COLA.
