Description

Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1916. [Thriller] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.x; 238. Publisher's red cloth, titles in black to spine and upper. Textblock browned as expected, endpapers to rear gutter split with the gauze showing through, binding still sound. Slight reading lean. A few small marks to the cloth, spine slightly toned. Very good. The first 'Shocker' featuring John Buchan's perennial hero, Scottish barrister and MP Sir Edward Leithen, who must stand alone against a sinister secret society whose code name is 'The Power-House'. The novel is notable for the unsettling portrait of Edwardian London that it paints; not the heart of the British Empire at its height but rather a nightmarish landscape haunted by the brethren of this anarchic cabal as it goes about its nefarious work, unseen and apparently unstoppable.

Hall's remains on the ground floor offering an exceptional range of quality used books.
