The 39th entry in The Five-Foot Shelf of Books series, "The Harvard Classics", edited by Charles W. Eliot, who has supplied introductory notes. With sepia frontis portrait of Hippolyte Adolphe Taine. --- In dark red cloth-covered boards with the Harvard crest in gilt on the cover; gilt-stamped spine titling & decorations and grey-green topstain. Lacks a dust jacket. --- With mild sunning to spine, partial splits near front and back of volume, slightly bowed boards and with chafing to cloth at spine ends. Though damaged, the book remains intact and fully readable.; Small Octavo (7-1/2 to 8 in. tall); 462 pages .
