[From Wikipedia]: Julius Lazarus (1919-2008) Was Born And Raised In Europe And Educated In Vienna, Austria. After Serving An Apprenticeship With A Blacksmith, He Acquired Skills As A Machinist And Toolmaker. In 1939, Lazarus Emigrated From Austria To The United States To Escape Nazi Oppression. Settling In New York City, He Obtained Work As A Machinist And Joined The United Electrical Workers Union (Ue), A Union That Was Active In Progressive Political And Social Causes, Including The Early Civil Rights Movement In America. The Ue's Left-Wing Orientation And Strong Stand Against International Fascism Dovetailed And Reinforced Lazarus's Own Socialist Perspective. Lazarus Joined The United States Army In 1942 But Was Honorably Discharged Following A Knee Injury That Rendered Him Unfit For Combat Duty. Returning To Civilian Life He Attended Classes At The New York Institute Of Photography And Embarked Upon A New Career As A Photographer And Photojournalist. Upon Graduation, He Traveled Extensively As A Freelance Photographer Throughout The United States, Europe, And Communist Bloc Countries During The Post-War Period, Documenting In Photographic Images Influential Political Figures, Intellectuals And Social Activists. Among His More Prominent Subjects Were: Paul Robeson, W.E.B. Dubois, Henry A. Wallace, And Vito Marcantonio, The American Labor Party Congressman From New York. During The 1948 Presidential Election Campaign, Lazarus Attended Progressive Party Events And Rallies And Photographed Presidential Candidate Henry A. Wallace. Lazarus Accompanied And Photographed Noted Singer, Actor, And Political Activist Paul Robeson At Many Of These Political Rallies. Lazarus Contributed Photographic Images To Union Publications, Domestic Left-Wing Newspapers And Journals, And A Variety Of Foreign Magazines Covering Youth Cultural And Sporting Festivals In Communist Bloc Countries During The Late 1940S And Early 1950S. Through His Documentary Photography, Lazarus Exposed Urban Squalor, Poverty, And Unfair Housing Discrimination Against Black Families In New York City. During This Same Period, He Also Photographed Political Demonstrations In New York City Denouncing The Cold War Policies Of The United States And Organized Rallies Supporting American Communist Party Leaders And Members Under Indictment For Violation Of The Smith Act. In 1968, He Started His Own Commercial Photography Business, Lazarus Photo In Hyannis, Massachusetts, Specializing In Cape Cod Scenery Postcards And Brochures.
