Extremely rare volume of poetry and essays by the early 19th century French author, poet and literary figure, Delphine de Girardin née Gay. This small (4.5 in. x 2.75 in.) volume is over 180 years old and is in excellent condition. Quarter bound in green leather and marbled paper. The spine is embossed with gilt scrollwork, title and author. The hinge is tight and the pages slightly yellowed with age, but still in fine, readable condition. Red Silk bookmark is still attached and faded only on the surface outside the book. No internal markings, bookplates or tears to pages. A remarkably preserved book for its age! 1st edition, 2nd printing binding. A collection of plays, poems and stories from avant-garde, feminist writer, Gertrude Stein. Published by The Four Seas Company, Boston, 1922. Hardcover. 419 pp. Contains Stein's experimental writing style with an introduction by Sherwood Anderson. No dust jacket. Binding has minor chipping and bumping on corners. edges and on head of spine along with some light soiling. Hinge is intact but slightly loose through the first 6-8 pages of the book. Ink name and date on FFEP. Pages are clean and unmarked. No tears!

The two black 'B's' on the spine have faded. There is a ribbed spine. Owner's bookplate on FEP. Endpapers have some browning with age, otherwise the pages are bright and clean. Nineteen black and white illustrations throughout.

This gorgeous book is a first edition of the combined titles, "Now We Are Six" and "When We Were Very Young" printed in 1932. Spine ends lightly rubbed, very minor bumping to corners and some slight soiling to boards and sunning to spine. No internal markings or dedications. Light pencil bookseller markings and price on FFEP. Twelve colour plates by original Milne artist Earnest Shepard with scores of smaller black and white drawings throughout.
