Elegantly bound in unsigned full contemporary forest green morocco, heavily gilt extra, gilt and blind-stamped ornamental frame side panels, with insets of gilt floral elements and lyre devices, a.e.g. Engraved head and tail-pieces. Extremities rubbed, with short crack at crown of lower joint, bound without ad leaf, inner hinges cracked (but sound), some foxing and offsetting from images, yellow coated endsheets stained, otherwise about very good. First illustrated edition, with fifty-five vignettes engraved after designs by Turner, Stothard and others. Turner's "delicate and graceful vignettes, which are miracles of fine detail, seem fairly to float upon the page" - Ray. A uniform edition of Rogers's POEMS appeared the same year. RAY 13. A very good, bright copy. Finely bound in early twentieth century leather binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for the Los Angeles department store J. W. Robinson Company and with both companies names stamped to the inner front board. Full plum calf. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Gilt decorative border on both boards. Front board with the tile lettered in gilt. Gilt inner dentelles. Colour printed floral endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owners bookplate to the front paste down endpaper. Some rubbing to the edges but overall a very good clean copy in a pretty leather binding which is housed in a floral paper (the same as the endpapers) covered slip-cace.

Spine has five raised bands, gilt ruled panels, gilt lettering, date to foot of spine. Single gilt fillet border to boards. Gilt fillet to board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all page edges gilt. Original cloth front cover bound in to the rear of the book. Fine condition throughout. Spines have five raised bands, red morocco title labels, compartments ornately decorated in gilt. Some marking and slight worming to boards. Spines rubbed with slight wear to head and foot. A couple of volumes have slight cracking to joints but all boards are firmly attached. Gilt decorated board edges and turn-ins. All page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Very tight bindings in excellent overall condition. Clean pages throughout. French language. All 30 plates are present and in first class condition (one plate in Vol. V has been bound in upside down.) A rare and important early edition of Molière's works, reproducing the 1682 first collected edition. An excellent example, complete with all plates and in attractive contemporary bindings.
