En route, he is injured and forced to spend several months recuperating in Wittenberg, a town in which the religious climate at this time is extremely uneasy. In Wittenberg, Tilman finds temporary employment in the print shop of Melchior Klein who is printing many of the manuscripts of Martin Luther, a young monk stirring up the townsfolf with his papers opposing the accepted authority of the Church. Greatly impressed by Luther, Tilman finds himself torn between the religious traditions of his boyhood and the theological reforms advocated by this prominent servant of the Church. 207 pages.
