Waterloo, Ontario: Canadian Federation of University Women , 2007. 160 pp, 11 1/4" H. **Volume 2 only.** Many b&w photographs. "It was a time of intense patriotism: in the daily newspapers, war bulletins and casualty reports appeared beside newspaper advertisements urging Canada's women to join the Navy and release a man for service afloat. During the Second World War, there were 6,783 women from across the nation who did just that, and in the process changed Canadian society. They came to Galt, Ontario, to receive basic training at the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service training centre - H.M.C.S. Conestoga. From the arrival of the first recruits in October 1942 until the lowering of the ensign in March 1945, this 'ship' on the hill was the place where it all began for Canada's wartime naval women, the Wrens. (T)hese proud and capable women served at naval bases across Canada and overseas - as coders, cooks, drivers, stewards - demonstrating that women could do just about anything, and do it well. Through their anecdotes, photographs and letters, this decisive period in Canada's history comes alive again." The half title page has been removed, leaving just a small strip (possibly to remove a previous owner's identification.) slight lean to spine, two tiny dents on bottom edge of boards.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good-/No Jacket - (as issued).
