Andrea Argoli (1570-1657) was a versatile Italian scholar: a jurist, mathematician, astronomer and astrologer, and medical writer. From 1622 to 1627 he was a professor of mathematics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, a post he likely lost because of his enthusiasm for astrology. In 1632 he became professor of mathematics at the University of Padua.Thorndike describes Argoli’s discussion of astrological “critical days” as an example of the continued prevalence of astrology in the seventeenth century: "Having in its early chapters asserted the influence of the stars, Argolus devotes the ninth chapter of the first book to instruction how to predict from one's nativity the coming train of events of the human body … it is only with chapter 14 that we at last come to critical days of which the discussion continues to… Read More

The outer binding of this leather-bound book shows many signs of wear over the last 340 years, but the hinges are firm and intact. Endpapers are heavily toned and there are some light pencil scrawls on REP's (child scribbling?). Some end papers have small tears and creases. Published by the long-time printing firm, Thomas Newcomb for another London printer, Joseph Hindmarsh, at the "Black Bull in Cornhill, near the Royal Exchange." Seneca was a Stoic philosopher of Ancient Rome, a statesman and dramatist.

Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. An abbreviated compilation of information tidbits and lists of animals, earth science, plants, crimes, and all kinds of information describing the natural and human world. The author was a French Jesuit scholar (1618-1673). Measures 6.25 x 3.75 inches. .

This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.

Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint.
