About This Item
Forge, 1996. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/Good. 301 pp. Book is inscribed, "For Gary - All best wishes - Elmer Kelton 4/6/96" in a lovely green ink. Black boards have some bumping to spine and corners with scuffs that are difficult to see in the scans. Dust jacket is the same, edge wear, scuffing, abraded corners, all difficult to see in the scans. When Trey McLean leaves his family and sets off to learn the cattleman's trade, he's as green as they come. But Trey learns fast. He learns deceit from a con man, and love when he meets the woman he's destined to marry. On a cattle drive to Kansas, Trey learns the trade from veteran drover Ivan Kerbow, but he also learns the code of violence and death from an outlaw who will plague him at every turn.
Reviews
On Apr 9 2020, a reader said:
Trey McLean leaves home according to family tradition which says only the oldest son could remain at home. So, he leaves the East Texas cotton farm to become a trail driver of cattle to Kansas. He has much to learn and must learn if he expects to survive this new life he has chosen or has been thrust upon him. Hense a pumpkin roller, a green horn, a farm boy, thought to be more trouble than they are worth having around. And as with any Elmer Kelton book there are characters who are characters we have met somewhere in our own lives. I heartily endorse this book.
