Contains interesting observations on life in San Francisco and in the mines. Gardiner came to California via Panama and remained for eight years. Morgan's 65 page introduction provides an extremely comprehensive survey of the entire literature of Gold Ruhs reminiscences, discussing in detail every such work published from 1860 to the present day, making clear why Gardiner's narrative stands "in the very first rank" of this literature.
