About This Item

London: Collins, 1983. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good Indeed. 9" by 6.5". None. The first edition of this comic novel by notable author George Macdonald Fraser. The first edition of this novel in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Fraser defined this novel as "a burlesque fantasy on every swashbuckler I ever read or saw." It tells the story of a classic hero, some damsels in distress, and the six captains who let the infamous Coast Brotherhood. This novel carries Fraser's writing style that characterised the ever-so-popular and beloved Flashman series. George MacDonald Fraser was a British author and screenwriter, his most notable works being the Flashman Series, as well as the live action of The Three Musketeers and the James Bond Film Octopussy. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition, except for some very faint tidemarks to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, though there are small stains to the bottom corner of the pages from the front free end paper to page 24, and to the top edge affecting pages 57 to 226; however, these stains do not affect the text. Good colour to the dust wrapper but staining to the front flap and reverse of the wrap. The dust wrapper is otherwise in lovely condition. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Repackaged to tie-in with hardback publication of 'The Reavers' and to appeal to a new generation of George MacDonald Fraser fans, 'The Pyrates' is a swashbuckling romp of a novel. The Pyrates is all the swashbucklers that ever were, rolled into one great Technicoloured pantomime – tall ships and desert islands, impossibly gallant adventurers and glamorous heroines, buried treasure and Black Spots, devilish Dons and ghastly dungeons, plots, duels, escapes, savage rituals, tender romance and steaming passion, all to the accompaniment of ringing steel, thunderous broadsides, sweeping film music, and the sound of cursing extras falling in the water and exchanging period dialogue. Even Hollywood buccaneers were never like this.
