First edition, second printing. Sir Rudolf Ernst Peierls (1907-1995) was a German-born British physicist who played a major role in the Britain's nuclear weapon programme, as well as the subsequent Manhattan Project. The book develops the subject from the basic principle of quantum mechanics. The treatment covers the electron theory of metals as well as the dynamics of crystals, including the author's work on the thermal conductivity of crystals.
