An empty envelope hand-addressed by Queen Mary is laid in, along with an autograph letter signed (ALS) on Blenheim Palace stationery from Alexandra Mary Hilda (Cadogan) Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, to her sister, Edith. The standard biography of Mary of Teck, Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from the accession of her husband, King George V, in 1910 until his death in 1936, and the mother of kings Edward VIII and George VI and Mary, Princess Royal. Her intellect, good sense, and artistic taste fitted her to be the wife of a sovereign, and her concern with the welfare of servicemen in World Wars I and II helped to make her popular with all classes of the British people. Frequently depicted in popular culture, among the actresses who have portrayed Queen Mary include Dame Wendy Hiller (Crown Matrimonial), Dame Flora Robson (A King's Story), Dame Peggy Ashcroft (Edward & Mrs. Simpson), Claire Bloom (The King's Speech), Valerie Dane (Downton Abbey television series), Dame Eileen Atkins (The Crown), and Geraldine James (Downton Abbey film). 685 p. with a color frontispiece portrait, 32 illustrations, three folding genealogical tables, and a folding map. Octavo. Full burgundy morocco binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with elaborate gilt stamping, five raised bands, and marbled endpapers. The top corners are lightly bumped, with some very mild sun fading along the spine. Better than very good.
