About the author

Educated in Bradford and at Oxford University, Stuart Baker has been compiling the Rail Atlas since it was first published in 1977, combining its regular update with senior positions in today's railway industry in Britain. His professional career started with British Rail from university and his operational career concluded as Operations Director with one of the privatised Train Operating Companies. Since the late 1990s he has held a number of senior positions within the strategic railway industry and is currently based within the Department for Transport, where he is Deputy Director for National Rail Projects. Married with a family, he lives in York but also has a flat in London.
