New York: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, Inc, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. An eloquent story of suffering and redemption, Hawes's autobiography, which has been favorably compared to Claude Brown's "Manchild in a Promised Land," recalls the celebrated jazz pianist's life from his early years in Los Angeles to his struggle to revive his career during the late 1960s and early '70s. Noted for his rhythmic playing at fast tempos, Hawes (1928-77) taught himself piano, and played with Sonny Criss, Dexter Gordon, and Wardell Gray while still a teenager. In addition to working with legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker, who had a strong influence on his music, Hawes was employed during the 1950s by the figureheads of the budding West Coast scene, Shorty Rogers and Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars. However, just as he began rising to prominence, Hawes' career was detailed by drug addiction. Convicted of heroin possession in 1958 and sentenced to hard time, he was freed in 1963 by an executive clemency order from President John F. Kennedy. Although he began recording and touring again, Hawes found the jazz scene changed and less welcoming, and he continued to battle his own personal demons. Original orange paper-covered boards over a purple cloth spine, with gilt and blind-stamped titles. Previous owner's ink signature to the front flyleaf, with a very faint smudge to the top edge. The dust jacket is a touch sun faded along the spine, with some moderate shelfwear; otherwise a very good copy of this highly regarded and rather uncommon jazz memoir.
