About This Item

London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1864. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. viii, 264 p. 21 cm. Green pebbled cloth with blank impressing. Gold print on spine. Bumped corners, a few small dents in edges, softened spine ends, rubbed boards, tears in hinges. Former owner's label on front pastedown. A few small tears.

Morris's entertaining journal takes the reader from St. Louis to the Colorado Rockies in the summer of 1863. The author had intended to travel by steamer up the Missouri to Fort Benton and the Montana gold fields but his boat broke down, leading him to travel to Denver instead. There he spent several months before returning east, so that he was well able to describe Denver, ranches, small Western towns, and the experience of gold mining. Graff 2899. Sabin 50853. Wagner-Camp 404.
