About This Item
Portland: Binfords & Mort, 1968. Hardcover. Foreword by Mark O. Hatfield. 8vo. Brown cloth with orange lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xiii, 166pp. Illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Near fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear. A handsome and tight first edition of this memoir of life on a central Oregon ranch in the early 20th century. Choice autograph addition: Tipped facing the title page -- extra-illustrated -- is a Typed Note Signed from the book's foreword writer Mark O. Hatfield, 1p, 6½" X 8", Washington, DC, 21 May 1984. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman (1912-98, founder of Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Book Shop). Near fine. On "United States Senate" letterhead, Hatfield sends "Many, many thanks for sending along a copy of Abraham Lincoln, The Man Behind the Myths. With each new book on the President I find more reasons to study Lincoln carefully, as is true with almost all the former Presidents." Signed simply "Mark" in black fineline; he also crosses out the typed "Mr. Newman" and writes in "Ralph." Hatfield (1922-2011) served as Oregon's governor (1959-67) and senator (1967-97). Newman's large custom Bernhardt Wall-engraved Lincoln-theme bookplate graces the front pastedown.

Have been reading a lot of Western ranch type books lately, because I am quite interested in the early Western history, & this one seems to offer the author's stories & anecdotes to the maximum. She writes of the ranch under the rimrock, & her family, both her own children & husband, plus her family of origin. The difference in this book is that the ranch in this story is in eastern Oregon. Yes, I would recommend this book to others. I especially like that I have have an "author signed" copy.
