Description

Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1990. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. Attractive duck egg blue linen boards, spine lettered in black. Extremities bruised. Matthew Kieran's name in black biro to ffep and his marginal notes throughout. Programme for Putnam's Gifford series of lectures, Renewing Philosophy (1990-91), laid-in (creased and stained, with "Order book" in Kieran's hand to front page). In the original dust jacket: chipped, rubbed and soiled. An interesting, philosopher's working copy of Putnam's book, which sought "to embed philosophy in social life". Good+/ good+ Hilary Whitehall Putnam (19262016) was an American philosopher, who made significant contributions to various branches of the discipline, including analytic philosophy and philosophy of mathematics and science. His rigourous, self-critical approach led him to change his position across his career. In 1990, Putnam was Walter Beverley Pearson Professor of Mathematical Logic and Modern Mathematics and Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University. The prestigious Gifford Lectures are "virtuoso performances" and considered "the highest honor in a philosopher's career"; the 1990-1991 series was held at the University of St. Andrew's. From the academic library of Matthew Kieran (1968-), Professor of Philosophy and the Arts at the University of Leeds (2009-2021) and the ASA/BSA's Wollheim Lecturer for 2021.
