About This Item
New York: J.B. Ford and Co, 1869. First Edition. Octavo. Frontispiece, 624 pages, index. 10pp. ads. One of the great autobiographies of the nineteenth century and remains his most enduring book, instructive to this day and often compared, quite justifiably, to Benjamin Franklin's immortal work. Particularly fascinating is Greeley's narrative of his youthful adventures, including his entrance into the exciting metropolis of New York. When J.R. Ford announced they would publish this complete edition of his work on December, 16, 1868, booksellers awaited printed copies but they would not be ready until 1869 (hence, though copyrighted in 1868 it took time to prepapre the volume with the index. Bpund in green cloth centrally stamped in gilt, spine gilt, brown coated endpapers. A near fine copy lacking only the first page of the ads following the index at the conclusion of the volume.
