About This Item
NY: The Tribune Association. Very Good. 1873. Hardcover. Binding mildy edgeworn, pages slightly yellowed, some instances of shadows from plates on opposing pages, some tipped in letters have some edgewear or splits to fold; Hardbacks (quarter blue gilt-tooled morocco spine & tips on marbled boards) , top edges gilt, marbled endpapers, inner dentelles with corner devises. This two volume set is a labor of love, probably created by collector and bookbinder George A. Zabriskie in the early 1900s. It includes 3 Greeley autographs: a tipped-in Greeley signature, a tipped-in 4 line note signed by Greeley, and a laid-in portion of letter signed by Greeley. In addition to the 8 originally published illustrations, there are numerous bound-in illustrations and tipped signed letters. These include 16 original letters (tipped-in) signed by historically significant people mentioned in the book. Also skillfully bound-in are approximately 200 plates (removed from other documents) showing people and places mentioned in book. The signed letters are from the following individuals: Walter Forward (1827), William H. Seward (1868), T.H. Corwin (1862), E.A. Sothern (?), George M. Dallas (1864), John A. Dix (1834), Thomas Hart Benson (1831), Richard W. Thompson (1841), to president signed by several senators (1849), Thomas Ewing (1833), John G. Palfrey (1864), Edward Everett (1861), N.P. Banks (1840), indecipherable congressman (1865), J.E. Johnston (18?), and George Shea (1866); 8vo; xvi + 624 + lxxiii + 9 pages; Signed by Author .
